Yellow Fever Certificate: What it is and Who Needs One
If you’re planning a trip to parts of Africa, South America or beyond, you may have come across the term yellow fever certificate and wondered whether it actually applies to you. The short answer is: it depends on where you’re going. The longer answer is worth understanding before you book your jabs.
What is a Yellow Fever Certificate?
A yellow fever certificate is an internationally recognised document that proves you’ve been vaccinated against yellow fever. It’s issued under the International Health Regulations set by the World Health Organisation and is accepted by border authorities worldwide.
The certificate is only valid if it’s been issued by an approved yellow fever vaccination centre, which means you can’t simply get the jab at your GP and receive one. Once issued, your certificate is valid for life.

Why Do Some Countries Require it?
Yellow fever is a serious viral disease that is transmitted by mosquitoes and many countries want to prevent it from spreading across their borders. Some nations require proof of vaccination as a condition of entry, meaning no certificate, no entry. Others only require it if you’re travelling from, or have been travelling through, a country where yellow fever is present.
There are two types of requirements:
- Mandatory requirement - proof of vaccination is required for all travellers entering the country
- Conditional requirement - proof is only needed if you’ve recently visited a country where yellow fever is endemic or active
Requirements can change over time so it’s important that you check the current rules for your specific destination well ahead of time.

Which Countries are Affected?
Yellow fever is found across sub-Saharan Africa and tropical South America. Many countries in these regions either carry the disease, require proof of vaccination for entry, or both. Some countries outside these regions also require the certificate if you’re arriving from an at-risk area. Because the list of affected countries changes as outbreaks occur, the best source to check is the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) travel advisories for your destination.
What to do Before You Travel
- Check whether your destination requires a yellow fever certificate for entry
- Find out if any countries on your route require it based on where you’ve been
- Book your vaccination appointment in good time, ideally at least 10 days before departure
- Keep your certificate safe; a lost certificate can cause problems at the border
