What to expect at your travel vaccination appointment
Planning a trip abroad is exciting but staying healthy while you are away matters just as much. Here at MK Travel Clinic we aim to make the vaccination process straightforward and tailored to your plans. Below is a step-by-step overview of what to expect when you visit.
Before Your Appointment
Before your appointment you will usually be asked for some basic details such as where you are travelling to, how long you are going for and the type of trip you are planning, e.g. business, backpacking or just visiting family. If you have a vaccination record it helps to bring this to your appointment, as well as a note of any medicine you are taking, including over-the-counter and herbal products. Arriving 5-10 minutes early gives you time to check over any forms and helps the appointment to begin on time.
Your travel health consultation
Your appointment begins with a one-to-one consultation with a trained travel health clinician. This is your chance to discuss your trip in detail so we can assess your risks properly.
We will usually ask about:
- The countries and regions you are visiting
- Rural or city stays, organised tours or independent travel
- Activities such as trekking, safaris or working with animals
- Previous vaccinations and past reactions
- Any medical conditions, allergies and current medicines
- Pregnancy or plans to become pregnant
Using this information, we follow current travel health guidelines to recommend suitable vaccinations and other precautions.
You will have time to ask questions and decide which vaccines you would like to go ahead with.

Recommended vaccinations and medicines
Based on your plans, the clinician may advise a mix of routine boosters, such as tetanus or measles, travel-specific vaccines such as hepatitis A, typhoid, rabies or Japanese encephalitis, and tablets for malaria prevention if needed.
You will receive clear explanations about what each vaccine protects against, how many doses are required and the timing between them. Possible side effects and how to manage them are discussed, along with when you can expect to be fully protected. If malaria tablets are recommended, the type that suits you best and how to take them correctly will be arranged during the consultation.
When it is time to have your vaccines, injections are typically given in the upper arm. Each one is explained before it is given so you know what to expect. The technique is quick and clean, using single-use equipment. Afterwards you will be asked to rest for a few minutes so we can check that you feel well before you leave. Most people experience only mild discomfort such as a sore arm. Serious reactions are rare, but the team is fully trained to manage them. Your vaccination record will be updated and, if required for certain destinations or vaccines such as yellow fever, an official certificate will be issued.
